In the temperature range where the spectral specific heat C(ω)∝ω 2 and independent of T, the intrinsic phonon mean free path l i ∝ω −2 T − defects scatter phonons with attenuation length l p ∝ω ng a frequency ω 0 such that l p (ω 0)=l i (T, ω 0), the thermal conductivity with point defects becomes (1) λ p /λ i =(ω 0 /ω m) arctan (ω m /ω 0. The theory of phonon scattering by vacancies is applied to oxygen vacancies in zirconia and rutile. These vacancies are the major source of point defect scattering in stabilized zirconia. It is shown that the theory agrees well with thermal diffusivity reductions in reduced rutile.

    A theory of the phonon spectrum of a normal-state tunnel junction is presented. The relevant phonon emission processes as nonequilibrium phonon emission and Ohmic dissipation are taken into account. The derivatives of the spectrum with respect to the bias voltage are calculated and are found to be in good agreement with recent experimental results.
